Great Wall sales growth slows to 5.3% in August
Great Wall Motor Co., which enjoyed robust sales growth earlier this year, said deliveries rose a comparatively modest 5.3 percent in September as competition heated up in the country's SUV market.
The company delivered 68,738 vehicles last month.
The growth came from demand for Great Wall's SUV models, sales of which advanced 19 percent year on year to 57,425 vehicles.
Despite strong SUV sales growth, Great Wall may have underperformed the overall SUV market in China last month.
Statistics on China's SUV sales in September have yet to be released. But in August, SUV sales nationwide surged nearly 46 percent year on year to more than 4.5 million vehicles.
SUVs are the only segment of the Chinese vehicle market that has remained hot, with domestic Chinese automakers and global brands launching a wave of new models this year.
Great Wall has been most successful with compact crossovers -- the heart of China's SUV market. By contrast, demand for the company's two full-size SUVs, the H8 and H9, has been limited. Last month, only 1,169 H8s and 637 H9s were sold.
Great Wall's pickup and sedan sales continue to fall. In September, pickup sales dropped 25 percent to 7,368 vehicles, while sedan deliveries tumbled 49 percent to 3,945 vehicles.
In the first nine months, Great Wall's overall vehicle sales jumped nearly 18 percent year on year to 595,224 vehicles, thanks to robust demand for its SUVs.
Great Wall, headquartered in Baoding, is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
