Dealership inventories remain above normal in August

Dealership stockpiles eased in August to a 46-day supply, down from a 50-day supply in July, according to the China Automobile Dealers Association.

Inventories remained well above average, which typically range from 24 to 36 days.

In August, stockpiles of foreign vehicles built in China dropped to a 40-day supply, down from 44 days a month earlier. Automakers have pared production in response to weak market demand, the association said.

Meanwhile, dealership stockpiles of imported vehicles fell to a 60-day supply, down from 68 days in July. August inventories of Chinese brands also edged down to 57 days, down from 58 days a month earlier.

Jaguar Land Rover still had the highest dealership inventories, with a 90-day supply in August. Two other brands -- Volvo and Chery -- also carried more than two months' supply at their dealerships.

Volvo reported a backlog of 65 days, followed by Chery with a 60-day supply.
