Chinese premier calls for campaign to add EV charging sites

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is calling for a campaign to build an extensive network of battery charging stations for electric vehicles.

At a meeting of senior government officials last week in Beijing, Li said all new residential housing property should have sufficient battery charging stations -- or at least have enough space for such stations to be built, reports gov.cn, a website run by the central Chinese government.

Li also called for at least 10 percent of existing public buildings and public parking lots to be equipped with public charging stations. He added that cities should have battery swap sites and fast-charging stations along interurban highways.

At the meeting, Li urged government ministries to subsidize battery charging station construction undertaken by private businesses and to allow those businesses to raise capital from bond issuance, according to the website.

Construction of charging stations would promote the use of EVs, boost economic growth and protect the environment, Li said.

In China, only EVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell-powered vehicles built in China qualify for government subsidies.

Thanks to the subsidies, sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids in the first eight months surged 350 percent from a year earlier to 18,054 vehicles, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Yet, battery-charging stations are still extremely hard to find in China.
