Benteler forms body and chassis joint venture with Changan

German parts supplier Benteler Automotive established a joint venture with state-owned Chinese automaker Changan Automobile Co. to build body and chassis components.

The Chongqing-based joint venture will supply Changan and its partnerships with Ford Motor Co., PSA Peugeot Citroen and Suzuki Motor Corp., Benteler said.

The 50-50 joint venture will build plants in Chongqing, the northeast China city of Harbin and the south China city of Shenzhen. It also will establish an r&d center in the southwest city of Chengdu.

Benteler did not disclose a timeframe for construction of the factories and r&d operation. But it said the new venture is expected to generate sales of 2 billion yuan ($323 million) by 2019.

The company also operates a wholly owned plant in Chongqing in addition to eight factories elsewhere in China.

Benteler Automotive, based in Paderborn, Germany, employs 20,850 workers and has 70 factories in 29 countries. Last year, the company generated revenues of 5.9 billion euros (49.4 billion yuan) from sales of components for auto bodies, chassis, and engines.
