GAC joint venture forms consortium to build assembly plants in Cameroon

A consortium of a Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. joint venture and two bus manufacturers plans to build two assembly plants in Cameroon.

The consortium, which includes Gonow Auto -- a joint venture between Guangzhou Automobile Group and Zhejiang Gonow Auto Co. -- China's Yutong Group and India's Azad Coach, will invest $160 million (979 million yuan) in the factories, which will be in the cities of Douala and Kribi, the Cameroon government said last week.

According to the business website Medafrica Times, the plants will produce vans, cars and SUVs. The first vehicles will go on sale in 18 months.

Gonow Auto is based in Taizhou in Zhejiang province on China's east coast and produces pickups and SUVs.

To produce vehicles in Cameroon, Gonow formed a partnership with two bus manufacturers, Zhengzhou Yutong Group Co. and Azad Coach.

Yutong, which is based in Zhengzhou in Henan province, produces buses and construction machinery. Azad Coach is headquartered in Jaipur, India.
