Geely Auto volume increases 13% in April despite weak exports

Geely Automobile Holdings' April deliveries rose 13 percent year on year to 40,120 vehicles, as strong demand in China outweighed weak exports.

Geely Auto's domestic sales last month surged 45 percent to 38,648 vehicles, while exports plunged 84 percent to 1,472.

The company blamed the export slump on shaky economies in two key markets, Russia and Ukraine.

By contrast, Geely Auto enjoyed robust demand in China for two redesigned compact cars, the Xindihao and new Vision.

The Xindihao is the redesigned EC7. Geely did not disclose sales data for Xindihao, but said combined sales of the Xindihao and the EC7 increased 16 percent from a year earlier to 14,497 vehicles.

Meanwhile, combined deliveries of the Vision and its new version totaled 10,473 vehicles, more than 14 times the number in the same month last year.

However, Geely's SUV sales were weak in April due to fierce competition in China. April deliveries of its three SUV nameplates -- the GX7, SX7 and GX9 -- dropped 21 percent to 5,616.

Geely Auto did not release April sales data for its other nameplates.

This year through April, Geely Auto's sales jumped 44 percent year on year to 180,643 vehicles.

Geely Auto, listed in Hong Kong, is headquartered in the east China city of Hangzhou. Its parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., also owns Volvo Car Corp.
