Mercedes' China venture launches engine output for GLA
Beijing Benz Automotive Co. launched production of the M270 series of engines at its powertrain plant in China's capital last week.
The engines will power the Mercedes-Benz GLA compact crossover produced by the joint venture, the company said. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine features direct injection.
Beijing Benz has now localized all engine production for the three models it produces in China -- -- the Mercedes-Benz GLA, C class and E class.
The factory is Mercedes' only engine plant outside Germany. Last June, the factory started exporting cylinder heads, engine blocks and crankshafts to Germany.
Beijing Benz, in Beijing, is a 50-50 joint venture between Daimler and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co.
Mercedes-Benz is China's third-largest luxury brand behind Audi and BMW. In the first two moths of this year, Mercedes sold 48,059 vehicles in China, up 14 percent over the year-ago period.
